Important
information when selecting
a new Akita!
Testing
parents for genetic
disorders (and certifying
them in open registry
databases)
is one of the
important differences between ethical, responsible
breeders concerned
about producing
healthy purebred
dogs and those who seek only to sell puppies for a little side income.
Puppy mills are not all dirty places in the Midwest. "Backyard breeders" often do not belong to breed clubs or participate in organized dog events. They do not participate in full health testing (hips, eyes and thyroid).
Such people may produce many puppies, but they are often of poor breed quality. Because they do not test their
breeding dogs for these minimum health tests, they increase the incidence of unhealthy Akitas.
When
considering acquiring
any new purebred
pet
you have a right
to have verification
provided signifying
that such tests
have been performed. People who explain away why they don't do tests or only do hips, for example, should be avoided no matter how available the puppies are or how much in a hurry you are to get an Akita.
Simply put, breeders
committed to producing
healthy Akitas will
certify such testing
with recognized
open registries
& provide prospective
homes with evidence
of such testing before placing a puppy or adult .
Purebred
dogs with normal testing results for the recommended
disorders common in their breeds and which
are submitted
to inclusion in an open health registry (see offa.org
above) receive an additional certification
from the AKC-affiliated Canine Health Information Center ("CHIC")
(info)
We exceed minimum requirements
and test for additional
potential disorders. Verification
of testing and
testing
info
is available by
searching the parents'
names at http://www.offa.org
Minimize
future health risks
in your Akita's
future by selecting
puppies produced

only
from provably health-tested
parents and requiring
proof of such testing or verifying it as described above.
THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANY GUARANTEE!
